Why is belize so expensive

Worried About Travel Safety? Avoid the Vatican. I am belizean. That doesn't mean it's not priced for tourists. Workers in Papagayo and Los Cabos make that amount or less too, but when short-term vacationers outnumber residents, it's only natural that prices are going to shoot up.

That's especially true when you're an island like Ambergris is or a peninsula like Placencia , where nothing grows locally and everything has to be shipped in. Hi Tim My family of four just returned from two weeks in Belize. We had an incredible time. We visited three parts of the country; Caye Caulker, San Ignacio, and Placencia and had a kitchen in two of them.

Being vacation we did eat out most nights but did cook four times. On a slightly different note I have been reading your Better Place book and really enjoying it. You mention Mike Campbell in Cayo as someone who is helping expats find housing. I looked online and cannot find him. If you could send his contact info to [email protected] I would greatly appreciate it.

Prices are more like in Europe and not like the rest of Central-America. But in the end we managed to not cross our regular budget. Although we had to travel in a different way than usually. That would have been impossible with our budget.

Next to that Belize produces next to nothing… Almost all goods, including food, are imported. The main reason Belize is expensive is because of import taxes. This means buying groceries in a regular supermarket is quite expensive. A can of beans was more expensive than what we used to pay in Belgium, in a country that lives of rice and beans. Also because of high import taxes even street food and small restaurants were expensive.

It is easy to get to Mexico or Guatemala and prices are much more budget friendly over there. Meals and accomodations can be very cheap and comfortable, and both have lots to offer. Baccalar, Mexico is located only a few hours away from Belize and is totally amazing and much more budget friendly!

Travelling in low season will reduce some of the prices on lodging and activities. Low season in Belize starts around May and ends in November. We travelled during this time frame and got some deals on accomodations in Hopkins and on our diving course in Caye Caulker. In other places resorts let us chill on their fancy beach or pool, because business was slow.

However in some places, tourism is that low that is hard to organize some activities. For example we wanted to experience more of the Garifuna culture in Hopkins, but tourism seemed kind of dead.

It can seem daunting to find your way around Belize using local transport. Especially when you read about robberies and lots of pickpocketing. The surcharge was set up to show that the airline isn't raising the base ticket price, when in fact their operating cost goes up due to increased fuel prices which they have no control over. It was set at "zero" at one point and it only increases as fuel costs go up. Now lets say I come back several months later and ask you to drive me that same route again.

But meanwhile the cost of fuel has doubled. Ah, but a driver or boat operator has never pulled a bait-and-switch on me "fuel extra" like the airlines get away with. Airlines yo-yo their prices up and down all the time. So they can easily bury a varying fuel cost the same place they bury salaries, leasing, landing fees, etc - under the single item called "fare". My business goes to airlines that are more honest with their customers.

There are a few. And seeing the above, Continental just went down a notch on my list. Many years ago here in Texas the state said power companies could include a fuel surcharge item in their billing to show that they weren't jacking up prices, but rather it was the rising cost of natural gas that was increasing their operating costs and thus was the reason for the high bills. There was a vocal outcry against the fuel surcharge and a candidate for governor Ann Richards saw that as an issue she could get votes on, so she campaigned on abolishing the fuel surcharge.

Lots of weak minded voters bit on it thinking they were going to get their power cheaper and she got elected. Sure enough, she told the power companies to remove the fuel surcharge line item from their billings.

It must have been a fire sale or something. Continental Airlines includes the departure tax. San Ignacio Town, Cayo, Belize. Belize is a tropical getaway that lures thousands of travelers from across the globe every year. This has become such a phenomenon that some has questioned the expense of traveling to Belize.

Fortunately, Belize is an affordable vacation spot and its prices are quite manageable for most travelers.
