Macduff is very human. He feels pain deeply. He had no choice but to try and save his beloved Scotland, and this sacrifice makes him noble. When Macduff hears that his family has been killed, Malcolm tells him to be a man and fight. Macduff says:. Is Macduff a brave character? Although Macduff kills a king, just as Macbeth did, this is not considered a sin. Macbeth is a villain and took the throne by foul means. Macduff is prepared to fight to the death.
He says if Macbeth should kill him Heaven forgive him too. Act 4 Scene 3. He declares:. In Act 5 Scene 8, Macduff and Macbeth face each other on the battleground. Macduff is a pragmatic character. He leaves for England and works for the greater good at the risk of the danger to which his family was exposed.
Malcolm is never afraid of showing his emotions in a Shakespearean England where men are supposed to act in a certain way to portray their manliness. He is very humane and his capacity to feel outweighs that of Macbeth and at a basic level, he performs that heroic act of avenging the murder of his family and he parallels it with his duty to his homeland. It is not clear in the play why he deserts his family at such a time to the dismay of his wife but one learns of his deep concerns for his family and country with equal sincerity.
Macduff is the character who has two of the most significant roles in the play: First, he is the discoverer of Duncan 's body. Second, the news of the callous murder of his wife and children Act IV, Scene 3 spurs him toward his desire to take personal revenge upon the tyrannical Macbeth. When he knocks at the gate of Macbeth's castle in Act II, Scene 3, he is being equated with the figure of Christ, who before his final ascension into Heaven, goes down to release the souls of the damned from hell the so-called "Harrowing of Hell".
Like Macbeth, Macduff is also shown as a human being. When he hears of the death of his "pretty chickens," he has to hold back his emotions.
