Soichiro is all business, all the time, but Matsuda has a relaxed and friendly air that allows him to integrate into any crowd, despite being a police officer.
When Light went to Aoyama for the investigation, Matsuda volunteered to come, since he could easily blend in with a crowd of college students and act and think like one of them. L agreed, and Matsuda later got the job done. Another of Matsuda's more flattering traits is that he is a highly empathetic person who is quick to feel sorry for others and understand their point of view.
