I called Surfside that night and spoke to the reservations desk. The person I spoke to didn't know what happened, agreed it shouldn't have happened and that it was all the hotel's fault. This was to be a special gift on a special day. We feel Surfside owes her at least one week at a Holiday Inn of her choice at no charge and owes her co-workers an apology. Response: He and his staff feel terrible about what happened, especially on your friend's wedding day, said Scott A.
Tripoli, Surfside director of rooms. Your friend was sent to another local hotel at Holiday Inn's cost, he said, and she was invited back the next night at a discounted rate.
That is normal procedure when the hotel has this unfortunate situation, Tripoli said. Although he does not expect guests to understand how this could happen, he said an honest mistake was made. Therefore, he is offering your friend five complimentary nights at any Holiday Inn of her choice within the continental United States.
He also said you and your co-workers were getting a letter of apology from Holiday Inn's general manager, a copy of which was supposed to be attached to our letter but wasn't. Is there an organization that takes aluminum pop tops? I've heard of dialysis costs being reduced for kidney patients when you donate these things. Heidi Boria.
Response: No, pop tops or tabs don't pay for kidney dialysis treatment, but if you save enough of them they bring the same price as any other kind of aluminum you may donate them to All Children's Hospital in St. The money from recycling tab tops helps finance the Ronald McDonald House milk and juice fund.
By the way, tabs or rings that detach when you open a can are illegal. And now that surface is in contact with the surface of the defrosting tray and it too melts. And so on and so on, until there is no more ice left.
And even though the ice is cooling the surface of the tray, the 70 F air continues to warm the tray, and that warmth moves quickly through the tray, including the spot where it ice cube is. So the ice continues to melt quickly.
It's quite dramatic, if you've seen one of the commercials. And yet, your experience also likely tells you that melting ice cubes is not an especially difficult task, certainly not one you would need a special tool for. In any event, melted ice is easily obtainable straight from your faucet. The real question is, how efficient is a defrosting tray at defrosting other frozen items, like a steak?
And the answer is, not very. The reason is simple. The surface of an ice cube turns to water when its temperature goes up by a few degrees, thus continuously exposing a new surface. But the outer layers of a steak don't melt away. A steak just stays steak. So the defrosting tray will slightly accelerate the warming of the surface of the steak, but not the interior.
That's because unlike copper or aluminum, steak is not a good conductor of heat. When thawing a steak, it's not the air that warms the inner parts of the steak, but rather, the outer parts of the steak itself. And since heat moves slowly through meat, it will take a long time to thaw a frozen steak at room temperature, even on a defrosting tray.
The fact is, a defrosting tray will not thaw a frozen steak noticeably faster than your kitchen counter will. And the problem with taking a long time to thaw a steak is that it becomes a food safety hazard.
The bacteria that cause food poisoning reproduce very quickly at room temperature. So by the time your steak has thawed, it will be teeming with dangerous bacteria. Ground meats like hamburger present an even greater danger when thawed this way.
Fortunately, you already possess a perfect tool for defrosting frozen foods. Improve this question. Community Bot 1. You can always save some money and just thaw in cold tap water, provided your items are in plastic bags — Huangism. Add a comment. Active Oldest Votes. Improve this answer. Nayuki 4 4 bronze badges. The only thing I would say to improve as far as SA expectations is to word it more like a question in the question section. So instead of "I will explain", ask "How does?
Well done. I suppose this also explains how those copper spherical ice makers work so quickly. I'd suggest adding that a device like this works great for an ice cube because as the ice melts, it makes water which makes excellent contact with the tray, and spreads over a larger area.
A piece of meat, on the other hand, doesn't melt, doesn't spread out, and makes less than perfect contact with the tray because it's not a liquid , and the frozen part of the meat will have a thawed piece of meat between it and the tray, thus significantly increasing the thermal resistance, and thus decreasing the thawing rate.
I find using the underside of an extremely heavy pan just as effective as thawing plates. The same physics apply. Show 2 more comments. GdD GdD Am I correct in assuming that you'll get a similar, but less potent effect from putting your frozen food in the fridge for a few hours? A refrigerator would slow down thawing as there's less of a heat differential between the environment the inside of the fridge and the food.
Maybe I don't understand your question. The Miracle Thaw speeds up your thawing a little bit, because it helps heat conductivity between the thing you're thawing and the air. A refridgerator does have colder air, but it's still warmer than the freezer.
And because it's usually colder than 4 degrees in the fridge, your food still thaws albeit it slower, thus less potent , but it will be safer than a Miracle Thaw for food safety thawing aids are not FDA approved.
If you are asking whether food will thaw in the refrigerator then the answer is yes. I think the risk of these isn't so much their exaggerated claims, but the fact that they are thawing at room temperature and may cause people to ignore the food safety guidelines i. I've never bought one of these, but I just seriously doubt that it could thaw a whole chicken in less than 2 hours, and maybe not even a thick cut of meat.
